What to look for in an AML/CTF platform

Almost anything looks good in a demo

Compliance platforms are demonstrated with clean data, a cooperative customer and a simple ownership structure. Your hard cases are the opposite. These are the questions worth asking before you commit — and we would encourage you to ask them of us as readily as of anyone else.

Screening: what is actually being searched

Ask which sanctions lists are covered and how often they update. Ask whether politically exposed person screening includes close associates and family members. Ask whether adverse media is genuinely searched or simply a web query. Then ask the uncomfortable one: what is your false positive rate, and how much time will my team spend clearing matches that are not real?

Ownership tracing: how deep does it go

Many tools record beneficial ownership. Fewer trace it. Ask what happens with a company owned by two holding companies owned by a discretionary trust — does the platform resolve it, or does it give you a form to type the answer into after you have done the work yourself? The difference is hours per complex client.

The evidence trail

This is the question most buyers skip and most regret. If a regulator asks you in three years to justify a risk decision made today, what can the system produce? You want the check, the result, the decision, the reasoning, the approver and the timestamp — retrievable as a single record, not reconstructed from a log. Ask to see that export on a real case.

Monitoring, not just onboarding

Plenty of tools handle the first day well. Ask what happens on day 200 when a client's director is added to a sanctions list or appears in adverse media. Is the customer rescreened automatically, and who gets told?

The practical questions

  • Where is our data hosted, and who can access it?
  • Can we export everything if we leave — in a usable format, not a PDF dump?
  • How does the client-side verification actually feel on a phone? Your clients experience this, not you.
  • Does pricing scale with checks, users or clients, and what happens in a busy month?
  • Is there real compliance expertise behind the product, or only software?

Software alone is not a program

No platform makes you compliant. You still need a risk assessment, a documented program, a compliance officer and trained staff. The right tool runs the program you have designed and captures the evidence while it does — which is why we pair the platform with the expert judgement behind it.
